The year is 1993, April 19th. The place is Club 101 in El Paso, TX. The music scene in El Paso at the time was fantastic, there were a number of local bands including the band I was in called Spoiled Milk. We were DeWayne Stone (Vocals), Justin Leeah (Drums), Alex Ferguson (Bass), Brad Applewhite (Guitar) and Wally Lozano (showed up later on Guitar). Good times, we had a great scene in El Paso where a lot of bands supported each other. Before the days of At The Drive In, some of the members were in a band called Jerk. The scene was a lot of backyard parties and even battle of the bands at different schools. One of the coolest shows we played with Spoiled Milk was a battle of the bands at Bel Air High School.
During those years, Fugazi was a punk band touring and we were able to see them at Club 101 in downtown El Paso, TX. Club 101 was hosting bigger shows back then. I recall seeing the Pretty Hate Machine tour with Nine Inch Nails. This particular show was in the alley behind the club. There weren’t a ton of people at the show, but man we were excited to see Fugazi in El Paso. It turns out that years later, we learned that Fugazi had recorded every show on tour for a number of shows and there was an actual recording of the show that I attended…..how many years ago now? 36 years? I looked at the recording just today and realized that I had even commented 14 years ago on the release of the show. Insane how the punk scene has had such an impact. My wife Lisa was at the show as well and I’m sure we were there with a bunch of friends at the time. Was one of the bigger cooler shows to see. We had a great time and just sharing a little bit of information from past shows. When I look at the setlist today, we’re talking a 30 song setlist for a $5 show. How fucking cool was that. Then you look at the songs, I don’t even remember them playing Repeater, but wish I could dial it in a little more…..but we were all there in the moment. Good times.
